ADVENTURES WITH ANALYSIS & CRITICAL THINKING
Here is a musical mystery piano students of any level can enjoy investigating:
Q: Both halves of the Elizabethan tune Greensleeves are identical—except for their first few notes. Why, then, would each half sound distinctly different from the other?
Following are some suggestions for guiding students in the interactive adventure of analyzing and solving this mystery. Through their sleuthing, students will:
- Discover why changing the context of a musical passage—but not the passage itself—can give the "illusion" of difference.
- Have an opportunity to try creating their own musical illusions.
- Find out about a related optical illusion, and some other fascinating musical illusions.
- Experience in Greensleeves an intriguing example of how more than just notes makes music what it is.

Most teen and adult beginners come to the first lesson with a large, ready-made “listening repertoire” of music that they like and hear often. Giving students simple tools for playing some of this music right away adds enjoyment and provides a good point of reference for upcoming learning.
